Day 10 – Disassembling the IRS Rear End of a 1973 Donor Beetle

Next, used a 17mm allen wrench to loosen the torsion arms off my donor rear. Once I took the trailing arm bushing bolts out, I put them in vinegar to clean them up a bit. After that, I removed both shocks and then the torsion cover plate. Next, I used a pry bar to free up the swing plate and torsion bars from the torsion tube. I sprayed yellow paint on the donor rear because I was trying to see if all my prying was actually having an effect…yep, it was, just slow going. It was getting dark out when I finished up. The last pic was taken just before I pulled out the torsion bar from the opposing side. It’s been a great day…got a lot accomplished!
