Day 11 – Cleaning up the Front Beam, Disassembly & Painting

Spent a few hours working on the front beam today. In the process of cleaning it up with my wire brush. The steering box seems to work okay. But, then it pissed water out when I rotated the front end (I planned on overhauling it anyway). I continued on and sanded the bottom of the front beam. Next, I sprayed automotive primer, then removed the bolts to the steering damper shock and both tie rods. You have to watch for some of those old cotter pins, sometimes they are just gone or, easily break off. I’ll have to come back and try to push these old cotter pins out and if that doesn’t work, I’ll try drilling them out. The next tool I reached for in my craftsman toolbox, was a ball joint removal tool. I got this one at Harbor Freight Tools. It was fairly inexpensive and knocked the job out in just a few short minutes. Removed the old steering bushing coupler and cleaned that up. Took a wire wheel to the tie rods then I hit them with primer. After, I cleaned up all the exposed threads I saw and other weathered areas, I sprayed primer on the front beam again, and the tie rods. Once all that had dried, I came back and hit it all with yellow Rustoleum gloss protective enamel.
