Day 22 – Custom Torsion Confusion

I was able to chat with my good friend Less Steger today. He answered many questions that I had where I felt like I was stuck. Here I am placing the stock torsion bars back into the donor rear end. This bar locked in to the splines on the inside in this photo. Now, the same bar into my sand rail. No matter what I tried, the bar would not slide all the way in as it did in the stock rear. It just felt different. I then measured the donor stock rear. The donor came in at 41 1/2″ in length (with offset). The sand rail came in at 40 1/4″ (with offset). Next, I measured my torsion bars…Some how I feel like they are just too long.

So, as it turns out the spline that is inside the torsion tube is actually from an older Volkswagen. That’s why it will not match up with the torsion bars of my 1973 VW donor. Since the bars are not able to slide into that spline in the middle of the tube, they appear to be longer. Well, at least this is my theory. Before I can attach the swing plates, I need to come up with a solution for this. Looking at custom torsion conversion plates now online.
